This indicator shows the percentage of high school students who had sexual intercourse with at least one person during the 3 months preceding the survey.
Why is this important?
Teens who are sexually active are at immediate risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Teens who engage in certain sexual behaviors such as not using contraceptives, use contraceptives inconsistently, or have multiple sex partners have an even higher risk of unintended pregnancy and STIs. Compared to teens who are not sexually active, sexually active teens have an increase risk of substance abuse, depression, and have lower levels of educational attainment.
