Science Cafe November 2017 From Placenta to Preschool: The Developing Brain and What Communities Can Do to Support It.

On Wednesday, November 1, 2017 the Clinical Translational Science Institute-Children’s National (CTSI-CN) sponsored this Science Café 360 event. The featured speakers were: Dr. Anna Penn, a neonatologist and developmental neuroscientist at Children’s National Health System; Dr. Lee Beers, a pediatrician and director of the DC Mental Health Access in Pediatrics (DC MAP) program and Early Childhood Innovation Network (ECIN); and, Gail Avent, Executive Director and founder of Total Family Care Coalition (TFCC), a family-run not-for-profit organization that helps families that have emotional, behavioral, and mental health difficulties. Dr. Penn discussed her research in neuroplacentology and how placental function shapes the developing brain. Dr. Beers provided information on the Early Childhood Innovation Network, with a specific focus on her research on early childhood mental health and toxic stress. Ms. Avent discussed the work of her grassroots peer-to-peer family and youth support program that she founded after experiencing stumbling blocks in accessing mental health services for her son.
